From the Page to the Stage

Well, this is pretty damn cool.

There’s something surreal about seeing an audition call for a play I wrote.

For a long time, the work exists in a very small world: an idea, a blank page, endless revisions, readings, more revisions, and all those conversations with characters who stubbornly refuse to do what you originally intended. Then, suddenly, other people are talking about auditions and casting. The thing that lived in your head and on your computer is becoming theatre.

At the same time, I’ve finally created this website to bring together the theatrical work I’ve been doing, both now and over the years. It includes my work as a playwright as well as my history in directing, producing, acting, and theatre management. Writing has become an increasingly important part of my creative life, and it feels good to finally give that work a home of its own.

The website also gives me a place to share what happens next: readings, productions, new plays, works in development, and, yes, those wonderfully surreal audition notices.

Theatre has been part of my life for a long time. But there is something very different about watching a story you wrote begin its journey from the page to the stage.

And right now, I’m enjoying the hell out of it.

What I changed: I kept your excitement and informal voice, but turned the announcement into a brief story about the transition from writing privately to seeing the work become theatre. It feels more permanent and appropriate for a blog than the Facebook version.
